Climate Design & Sustainability

The main vision is to look at a circular closed loop system of energy production. All different sources of energy contribute and support each other. The idea is to create a dynamic and inter-connected system where the inhabitants and their environment become actors of the process, participating in the energy production in different ways.

Our site is situated in Muide Port, Ghent, where we see a lack of green spaces and integration amongst the people. The aim for the village as a whole is to reconnect with nature, enhance the green and provide opportunities for social interaction. Along the water bank, we notice warehouses due to which the view of the water is blocked off from the inhabitants. Choosing this location for industrial buildings, we build an energy production building which takes advantage of the sources found on site to produce electricity for the whole of the village. The water is not only one of the main forms of energy, but we also allow the people to enjoy its views and create a place for interaction and activities.

Another main form of energy is waste which is collected from around the village, being part of our circular loop system, to produce energy.

The third main form is micro-algae, which by using CO2 and sunlight not only produces energy, but heat as well, while lowering the CO2 content in the environment.
