The aim of the studio was to build two Pre-Schools in the rural areas of Morocco, Tidli and Tamgounsi, focusing on the ‘sense of place’ and ‘materiality’. Our aim was to create two schools, while looking into the impact of space on children and how they have the power to encourage and aid in the mind development of the child.
This project was supported by the Good Planet Foundation, and was worked on in a group of three international students, from Pakistan, Turkey and Belgium, where we managed to work online as a team. My role was part of the conceptualization, analysis, design and technical
drawings.
Tidili - Based on a systemic but no less stimulating rammed earth column structure, the pre-school in Tidli respects the existing organization while responding to pupils’ needs. By making the most of elements such as the actual foundations and rubble waste from the ruins, the new design raises awareness of the site specificities and its advantages without leading to major changes in the
overall system.
Tamgounsi - Based on a systemic but no less stimulating rammed earth column structure and reinforced by concrete in order to act as a retaining wall, the pre-school in Tamgounsi respects the existing landscape and environment while meeting playfulness through the building. Its semi-buried status allows to make full advantage of the hilly context in both bio-climatic and recreational
principles.
